The Causes of High Youth Unemployment Rates in Taiwan

The adoption of AI, is slowly replacing the jobs previously held by humans, causing global unemployment rates to rise. However, there are many reasons for the rise in unemployment, and this essay will explore a few key causes of high unemployment rates. There are three major factors leading to the gradual unemployment of teenagers, including AI, more retirees than new entrants and escalating job requirements.

Firstly, artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the main reason that cause high unemployment rates in Taiwan. In recent years, the ChatGPT chatbot has become the most popular application, people use it for writing essays and asking questions for solving mathematical problems, among others. Because of this, many people are too lazy to solve problems themselves, resulting loss of the ability to think independently as individuals become overly reliant on AI to complete their assignments. As a result, humans will slowly be replaced and rates will rise.

Secondly, there are more retirees than new entrants in Taiwan, because of the low fertility rate. Affected by the pandemic in the past two years, many people have considered retiring early or changing their job types. In the past, the population aged 25 to 40 was Taiwan’s core labor force. However, in recent years, due to the impact of low fertility rate, the population under 40 years old has been decreasing year by year, so this may cause the rate to rise.

Finally, people always ask for high positions, but what they never think about is whether they are qualified for such a high position. Young people are always searching for a good job, however, some people clearly do not have good abilities. In this way, if every teenager were like this, the unemployment rate would increase very fast year by year.

As a result, I sorted out these three major factors for the gradual unemployment of teenagers in Taiwan. There may be more factors leading to rising unemployment rate, waiting us to solve, I only hope that each of the new generation teenagers can use their own abilities to get better jobs and lower the rate.
